The Story of the Nutcracker
It is Christmas eve and Clara and Fritz are playing around the tree during their family’s Christmas party. When their godfather Drosselmeyer, a very clever toy maker, arrives he has gifts for the two children. His presents are usually wonderful and especially this year’s gift to Clara, a nutcracker in the shape of a soldier. Fritz is very jealous and tries to grab the toy from Clara, and in the struggle the nutcracker is broken.
Clara is inconsolable until Drosselemeyer mends the toy by covering it with his magic handkerchief. Later that night, after she has been sent to bed, Clara sneaks down to see her nutcracker and falls asleep under the tree with the toy in her arms. Clara wakes as the clock strikes midnight to find that she is the same size as the toys and that her nutcracker and all the other toys have come to life.
Almost immediately they are attacked by an army of mice, lead by the ferocious Mouse King. The nutcracker bravely rallies the toy soldiers to fight off the mice while he attacks the Mouse King himself. The Mouse King is very powerful and is on the point of defeating the nutcracker when Clara throws her shoe at the Mouse King, killing him stone dead. The other mice flee and at that moment the nutcracker turns into a handsome prince.
The prince first leads Clara to the Land of Snow where they see dancing snowflakes in a magical forest, and then on to the Land of Sweets where they dance with the Sugar Plum Fairy. When Clara wakes up, she is under the Christmas tree with her nutcracker in her arms, and it has all been a dream… though maybe Drosselmeyer knows better!
